No chess at the library on Monday, June 10, 2013.

The Cowichan Branch of Vancouver Island Regional Library had (already) arranged for a film night in the space we use for the Chess Club. So NO Chess Club this upcoming week.

We will be back on Monday June 17. See you then!

Monday night chess begins!

The first Monday night chess get-together has been a success. One adult chess player/student and a number of the children from the Saturday chess class showed up. Not bad for a first time!

The adult student learned about some endings and the kids played some chess, got a few "checkmate in 1/2/3" for homework, and ... learned to play Bughouse! Fun, fun, fun.

Much thanks to the Adult Services Customer Services Librarian, Sheila Hammond-Todd, who is responsible for the fine poster you see above and for including a write-up about the new chess club on the Library website. Thank you, Sheila!

Chess Club at Cowichan Branch of Vancouver Island Regional Library in Duncan

Hi friends! With the Children's chess class winding down for the summer, I noted that a few (adults) were interested in continuing with a chess club of some kind. So I inquired at VIRL and they have given the green light to go ahead on Monday nights with a chess club! How good is that!?

Anyway, the club will be scheduled for Mondays at the Cowichan Branch, starting on May 27th, from 6 pm to just before 8 pm. (The library closes at 8 pm sharp.) There has been some interest expressed, so we will see how many turn up.

2012 Canadian Open Chess Championship

I'm registered in the under 2000 section. I bet that's the first time anyone from Maple Bay has been listed in a major Canadian chess tournament. As someone who spent time in "River City", I'm happy to see a number of Winnipegers, or former Winnipegers, as well. Jack Yoos, Kevin Li, Jeff Babb, Dezheng Kong, Jamie Campbell and John Remillard are all playing. Welcome to Vancouver Island, chess players! Here is the Monroi link for the tournament. Children's Chess Club takes summer break

Children's Chess Club begins on Jan 21, 2012

Hi chess friends. I may start a new blog but for now I just want to announce that I will be hosting a Children's Chess Club in Duncan starting on Saturday, January 21, 2012 at the Vancouver Island Regional Library ... time: 1145-1245 for now. Ages 6-15 and there will be lessons for those who don't know a thing about chess!
